4.4 V8 (125 Hp) CAT Automatic Verdict:

Rating 3 stars

Performance Verdict

This smaller V8 offers a good amount of low-end torque, making the Malibu feel effortless around town. While not a powerhouse, it's a smooth and capable performer for its output.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy will be a compromise, better than larger V8s but worse than V6s, typical for a carbureted V8.

Best Use Case: Drivers who prefer the smooth power delivery and sound of a V8 without needing top-tier performance.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Classic American styling and comfortable ride quality.
  • • Range of V6 and V8 engines offering varied performance.
  • • Spacious interior for up to six occupants.
  • • Relatively simple mechanicals, often easier to maintain for enthusiasts.
  • • Good trunk space for a mid-size sedan.

Cons:

  • • Poor fuel economy by modern standards, especially V8 models.
  • • Handling is soft and not very dynamic.
  • • Lacks modern safety features and crash protection.
  • • Carbureted engines can be finicky and require regular tuning.
  • • Limited availability of new parts for some components.
