1750 (72 Hp) Verdict:

Rating 3 stars

Performance Verdict

The 72 Hp 1750 engine provided more leisurely performance, suitable for relaxed driving. It was adequate for city use and gentle rural roads, but highway overtaking required planning.

Fuel Economy

Slightly better fuel economy than the HLS due to lower power, but still not a strong point. Expect similar figures in the low 20s to high 20s MPG.

Best Use Case: Primarily city driving and light rural use, where its modest power is less of a hindrance.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Spacious and versatile interior with a large hatchback boot
  • • Comfortable ride quality, well-suited for long journeys
  • • Good visibility from the driver's seat
  • • Unique and distinctive British design

Cons:

  • • Dated styling by the early 1980s
  • • Questionable build quality and reliability issues (typical of British Leyland era)
  • • Modest performance, especially the 72 Hp variant
  • • Poor fuel economy compared to modern vehicles
  • • Lack of modern safety features
