Opel Rekord:

The Opel Rekord is a large family car which was built in eight generations by the German car manufacturer Opel. Between 1953 and 1986, approximately ten million were sold.
The Series D and E Rekords also spawned derivative versions manufactured by Opel's British sister company Vauxhall and in the case of the Rekord E, GM's Australian arm Holden. In 1986, the Rekord nameplate was replaced by the Opel Omega.

Seating for 5 makes it ideal for daily use.

2.3 D (65 Hp) Automatic Verdict:

Rating 3 stars

Performance Verdict

The automatic transmission further hampers the already modest performance of the 2.3 D, resulting in very slow acceleration, suitable only for the most patient drivers.

Fuel Economy

Fuel consumption rises to 9.4 l/100 km with the automatic, diminishing some of the diesel's inherent economy benefits for a significant performance trade-off.

Best Use Case: Very relaxed cruising / Urban utility with convenience

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Spacious and practical interior, especially the Caravan model
  • • Robust and generally reliable mechanicals for its era
  • • Wide range of engine options to suit different needs and budgets
  • • Comfortable ride quality for long journeys
  • • Good value for money as a used classic

Cons:

  • • Prone to rust, particularly in older examples
  • • Performance can be sluggish with lower-powered engines, especially diesels
  • • Fuel economy, while good for some engines, can be high by modern standards
  • • Basic safety features compared to contemporary vehicles
  • • Automatic transmissions significantly impact performance and economy
