Rating 3 stars

Performance Verdict

Adequate for city driving, but feels underpowered on highways, with the older Tiptronic automatic dulling responsiveness.

Fuel Economy

Moderate fuel economy for a petrol automatic, not particularly efficient given the performance.

Best Use Case: Primarily city driving and short commutes where performance is not a priority.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Spacious interior and class-leading boot capacity for a family estate.
  • • Wide range of efficient and robust engines, including the legendary 1.9 TDI.
  • • Built on a proven Volkswagen Group platform, ensuring solid engineering.
  • • Excellent value for money, especially on the used market.
  • • Practical and versatile for family use and long journeys.

Cons:

  • • Some interior plastics can feel less premium than rivals.
  • • Base engines (e.g., 1.4 MPI, 1.6 MPI) can be underpowered for the estate body.
  • • Early 2.0 TDI (BKD engine code) models had known issues with cylinder heads and oil pumps.
  • • Older automatic transmissions (Tiptronic) are less refined and efficient than DSG units.
  • • Design can be perceived as conservative compared to some competitors.
