3.9 (112 Hp) Tip-Toe Shift Verdict:

Rating 4 stars

Performance Verdict

Identical engine performance to the standard 3.9L, but the 'Tip-Toe Shift' semi-automatic transmission offered smoother, more convenient driving, enhancing the overall user experience for its time.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy would be similar to the manual version, possibly slightly better or worse depending on driving style and the efficiency of the semi-automatic system, but still poor by modern metrics.

Best Use Case: City driving and general daily use, where the semi-automatic transmission reduced driver effort, making it more accessible and comfortable for a wider range of drivers.

Pros:

  • • Robust and reliable inline-six engine
  • • Spacious and comfortable interior for its era
  • • Distinctive classic American styling
  • • Good low-end torque for smooth driving

Cons:

  • • Poor fuel economy by modern standards
  • • Lack of modern safety features
  • • Soft suspension leads to wallowy handling
  • • Drum brakes offer limited stopping power
  • • Parts availability can be challenging for restoration
