Performance Verdict
The 4.2 TD (170 Hp) engine, specifically the 1HD-FT, offers legendary reliability and immense low-end torque, making it exceptional for off-roading and heavy towing. While not built for speed, its power delivery is perfectly suited for its rugged purpose.
Fuel Economy
For a large, heavy 4x4 with a 4.2L turbo-diesel, the fuel economy is reasonable within its class, but it is not an economical vehicle in absolute terms. Expect moderate consumption, especially under heavy load or off-road.

Overland travel, heavy-duty towing, extreme off-roading, and long-distance touring where reliability and capability are paramount.

Cons:
- • High fuel consumption for a diesel, especially given its age.
