4.2 TD (170 Hp) 4WD Verdict:

Rating 9 stars

Performance Verdict

The 4.2 TD (170 Hp) engine, specifically the 1HD-FT, offers legendary reliability and immense low-end torque, making it exceptional for off-roading and heavy towing. While not built for speed, its power delivery is perfectly suited for its rugged purpose.

Fuel Economy

For a large, heavy 4x4 with a 4.2L turbo-diesel, the fuel economy is reasonable within its class, but it is not an economical vehicle in absolute terms. Expect moderate consumption, especially under heavy load or off-road.

Best Use Case: Overland travel, heavy-duty towing, extreme off-roading, and long-distance touring where reliability and capability are paramount.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • • Legendary reliability and durability, especially the 1HD-FT engine.
  • • Exceptional off-road capability with robust 4WD system.
  • • Strong towing capacity, ideal for heavy loads.
  • • Spacious and comfortable interior for long journeys.
  • • Holds its value remarkably well due to high demand.

Cons:

  • • High fuel consumption for a diesel, especially given its age.
  • • Large turning circle makes city maneuvering challenging.
  • • Not agile or sporty; handling is typical of a large SUV.
  • • Older safety features compared to modern vehicles.
  • • Parts can be expensive, though rarely needed.
